Who is Will Bernard & What's an Otherbug??? Well read on & I'll tell you..... Will Bernard is one BAD ASS guitarist!!!! He hails from the Bay Area & has been dominating the local club scene there for years. Will's band in California goes by Will Bernard & Motherbug. He unofficially calls it "Otherbug" when he plays with musicians outside of his normal band. |
Will Bernard is an amazing guitarist out of San Francisco. Will has been involved with a host of boundary stretching groups, ranging from jazz, hip hop and world music to experimental music, with many stops in between. He has performed and recorded with Jai Uttal and the Pagan Love Orchestra, Peter Apfelbaum's various band incarnations, Beth Custer, The Coup, and Midnight Voices to name a few. In addition, Will's music friends include Trey Anastasio, Stanton Moore, DJ Logic, Robert Walter, Les Claypool and Josh Roseman. Perhaps his biggest project thus far was his collaboration with Charlie Hunter, called TJ Kirk, whose 2nd record for Warner Bros. "If Four Was One" was nominated for a Grammy in 1997. Currently Will heads up Will Bernard and Motherbug based in San Francisco. The rest of the guys that make up Otherbug are some bad ass NYC musicians. On drums we have Joe Russo. Joe Russo is a highly respected musician in the jamband scene. His projects include Fat Mama, Electron, The Big Unit and the Open Air Ensemble. Joe is a tremendous drummer & one of the best NYC has seen. His versatility is unmatched.. Joe is currently touring w/ Marco Benevento doing a drum/organ duo that is SICK! You can also see Joe this Fall behind the kit with Robert Walter's 20th Congress On the Hammond B3 we have Marco Benevento. Marco has recorded two independent piano trio releases, and plays with the Jazz Farmers who issued their first release in August 2000, transfarmerfunktet, featuring Brad and Andrew Barr of The Slip. "His organ work is just phenomenal, recalling a melange of a cross-section of styles from Keith Emerson to Jimmy Smith to Medeski and beyond. He fills the role of bassist, lead guitarist, rhythm guitarist, horn section and of course organs, and believe me, you can hear all of that going on as he plays. But it's never the quantity, but the quality that matters, and Marco is a genius of alternately filling all the musical "space" available to him and then purposefully leaving empty gaps to punctuate the rest of it." (A.Stein JamBase 2002) On bass we have the infamous Justin Wallace. Justin is a former member of ulu and brings serious skills and energy to the pot. Justin puts out so much energy when he plays it keeps the rest of the band on it's toes. Close friends with the band Topaz, many have seen him share the stage with Squantch, and many New Yorkers must remember the innovative Wallace/Russo Project at the Izzy Bar from a couple summers past. He has played in a slew of super jam type sessions like this with such notables as: Eric Krasno, Robert Walter, Al Schnier , DJ Logic, Stanton Moore, and we are excited to have him aboard. |
